Seven years after the previous entry, Kingdom of the Planet of the ApesThis film invites us once again into a world dominated by apes.
While it may only have been seven years for you, 300 years has passed between the events of War for the Planet of the Apes (which we saw in 2009) and the upcoming fourth film Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. Apes now dominate the world, while humans are living a lifestyle more like that of a neanderthal. For the most part, the apes seem to be happy with the arrangement, led their bonobo ruler Proximus Cesar (Kevin Durand), although the film’s main ape character Noa (Owen Teague), doesn’t share this opinion.
In the trailer, you can see that Noa begins to question the morality behind hunting humans. This is a fair question. He also begins to realize that the history of the planet isn’t what he had been taught. Freya, who you might recognize as Princess Cirilla, from Netflix’s The Witcher, also stars. Caesar says that she is smarter than most humans. The trailer soon pivots to Noa teaming up with the woman. An ape & human on ape war seems like all but an inevitability at this point.
Wes Ball, who directed the Maze Runner series of films, will direct this sequel. Ball directed the Maze Runner film series, but his name is probably most associated with the recent The Last Airbender. Legend of Zelda live action filmNintendo is currently working on a new project. Ball is currently working on the Zelda film, which will be their next project after Apes. It’ll take a little while before we see any concrete results.
Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes releases in cinemas on 10 May.
